an existing asset to a button symbol. For this project, though, you'll create a brand new symbol for the buttons. 1. Choose Insert > New Symbol. 2. Name the symbol menu_button. 3. Select Button for the Type, and click OK. Flash adds the menu_button symbol to the library and opens the menu_button Timeline. [View full size image] Importing a File with Button States The Up, Down, and Over button states can include any change in graphics, color, shape, or size. If you want to create a complex set of button states, you may want to create the artwork in Adobe Illustrator. For this lesson, you'll import an Illustrator file that already contains the artwork for three button states. Because the menu_button symbol Timeline is open, the imported Illustrator layers will fill the appropriate states. 1. Choose File > Import > Import To Stage. 2. Select the DVD_interface_button_states.ai file in the Lesson03/03Start folder. 3. Click Open (Windows) or Import (Mac OS). 4. Select all the layers in the file. The Illustrator file contains three button states. 5. Select Keyframes from the Convert Layers To menu. Selecting Keyframes imports the layers into the proper frames in a single layer. If you selected Flash Layers, as you did when importing the DVD interface, the states would import as separate layers, and the button wouldn't work properly. [View full size image] 6. Click OK. Flash imports the button state images as states for the menu_button symbol, and the symbol appears on the Stage for editing. [View full size image] Adding a Button Symbol to the Stage The menu_button symbol is in the library. You'll add an instance of the button to the Stage above each of the menu options in the main Timeline. 1. Choose Edit > Edit Document to return to the main Timeline. 2. Select the Menu layer. 3. Choose Insert > Timeline > Layer. 4. Name the layer Buttons, and select the first frame in the Buttons layer. 5. Drag the menu_button symbol from the Library panel onto the Stage, and position it over the words Play Movie. Flash adds an instance of the symbol to the Stage. 6.
